Haiti Fund, Inc. is blessed to have Nick Warren from the Marine
Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA to join the CODEP staff
as a visiting advisor for the fish project. Nick and co-worker
Bill Mebane were at L’Acul for a fish management seminar in April.
They met with all the CODEP
animators and toured the existing fish program in the mountains,
which has over 50 cement ponds. They helped Rick drain the ponds
at L’Acul and set up a nursery for restocking the CODEP them.
Nick returned for the month of May to encourage and train the
CODEP leaders in preparing their ponds so that they will not be
dependent upon commercial fish food. This is being accomplished
by installing natural apparatuses made from bamboo and coconut
fronds which will grow periphyton and produce enough food to not
only sustain fish but is comparable to ponds where fish food is
fed regularly. This has been proven already in the demonstration
ponds at L’Acul. There is much excitement in the mountains with
this new technique and we should see a marked difference in fish
production because of the education and demonstrations that Nick
is providing.
