Over 20 Years of Acomplishments!

What Works in Haiti

In 2013 CODEP  expanded its impact from the initial 30 small communities and 600 Haitian farmers (one third of whom are women) to 68 small communities and over 1,400 Haitian farmers (nearly half are women). Their lives and those of their families are being improved.  Accomplishments include:

  • Planting over 13 million trees since the inception of the project in 1990, with a retention rate over 80%.
  • Instituting a strong incentive program to avoid further deforestation of trees.
  • Digging over 1,200 miles of contour ditches to prevent further erosion.
  • Installing/Building over 100 cisterns and almost 90 houses as incentive awards/earthquake replacement homes since 2000.
  • Recognizing that agricultural development moves slowly in the Haitian culture.
  • Determining that nutrition and health improvement depend on good agriculture/food supply techniques.
  • Installing and operating over 30 fishponds as aids to protein dietary enrichment.
  • Establishing a process whereby women in CODEP have equal opportunities for jobs, promotions and management positions.
  • Pushing project decisions to the working levels in CODEP.
  • Developing and implementing the Office of the Director of CODEP executive leadership, a group of three individuals.
  • Recognizing and training high-performing Haitians to become the next generation of leaders.
  • Impacting the lives of over 50,000 people in the Léogâne Commune.
